Divinations: the art of remembering
the future

“I met her at one of the ‘revolution’ offices, and since I had nothing to do, I thought to have a relationship with her...” is how the second movement of Rasmi Abu Ali’s short story ‘Qit Maqsous al-Sharibain Ismahu Rayyes’ (A Cat with Clipped Whiskers called Rayyes) begins. The story, which appeared in Al-Adab magazine in 1977, depicts a brief relationship between a Palestinian, whose official profession is ‘resistance fighter’, as revealed in his identification papers at a checkpoint, a Swiss journalist and a street cat. The relationship evolves in Beirut in the 1970s during the peak of the Palestinian ‘revolution’, where the latter and its terminology, and all the Palestinian ‘work tools’, appear as a dull background. The story focused on the multiple complex dimensions of a revolutionary character, including their silly, nihilistic and absurd behaviours, and subsequently shattering the readymade idealistic, almost caricature-like depictions in literature at the time of the revolutionary as someone who is serious and always ready to carry on the anti-colonial struggle and fight. The story, in that sense, revolutionised the image of the revolutionary and the revolution as such, by establishing as its base human desires and life itself.

A Cat With Cut Whiskers Called Rayyes

A Cat With Cut Whiskers Called Rayyes

Rasmi Abu Ali At last we reached the building around midnight. A couple of boys were washing the entrance hall with soap and water. It was cold; Simone wore a fancy black coat with a fur collar that seemed out of keeping with her dishevelled look and her trousers splattered with paint and other stains. The elevator was out of order, the power cut. We took the stairs to the tenth floor and reached the top gasping for breath. Simone stood in the middle of the long corridor as if she wasn’t sure where the apartment was, then charged at one of the doors with sudden resolve, hammering and calling in a gentle voice that stirred up a strange longing, “Rayyes… Rayyes!” She had told me more than once that this cat was not beautiful at all, it was a mangy thing, soiled fur infested with fleas, and someone had even taken it into their head to cut off his whiskers. Then she had corrected herself in her broken English, said it was only because he had lived on the streets, but now he was cleaning himself up, bit by bit… Someone opened the door holding a candle, a round young man wearing a dishdasha. Saudi or Kuwaiti, I thought. Was it possible that we still had tourists despite the war? Simone darted into one of the rooms still calling, “Rayyes… Rayyes!” I explained to the dishdasha man, who seemed frightened and surprised, that she was looking for a little cat but the young man made no comment and seemed more interested in telling me who he was and why he was in the apartment, though I hadn’t asked him a thing. He was Rida’s brother, he said. I must know him. As the young man looked afraid, I decided to pretend I knew Rida and made a show of trying to remember. “Rida who?” “Rida Al Rawwass,” he said. “Ah, Rida!” I shot back. “Of course I know him. How is he?” The young man’s features relaxed. The thought that I knew his brother seemed to calm him, and it had the same effect on me. As we walked towards the room where Simone was searching, he went on: “Rida owns this apartment, as you know, but because of the war and the shelling…” He added some information about the family’s losses that I don’t exactly recall. I asked Simone if she had found the cat but she shook her head anxiously. “It can’t be,” she said. “He was here this morning.” She turned a suspicious eye to the young man, who looked embarrassed. A strange thought leapt to my mind: that this young man had eaten the cat. As if he sensed our silent accusation, he began to defend himself, denying he had ever seen a cat in the apartment, insisting he hadn’t left since noon… He even turned around, inviting us to search the other rooms of the large apartment. I noticed, under the sheer dishdasha, the number seven written in English on what must have been his undershirt, and I felt sorry for this young man and decided not to humiliate him any further with questions about the cat, though I was sure that he had simply opened the door and shooed the cat outside when he had come to check on his brother’s apartment.

Shifts/Transformations: A Path in the Gaza Valley

In 1994 the Palestinian Authority declared the Gaza Valley as a nature reserve. This area, previously known as “Al Hasa Valley/Wadi Al-Hasa”, and “Baysur River”, linked to the Canaanite Kingdom in Baysur in the Negev desert in the south of historic Palestine, is located at the end of a long watercourse, with a length of 77 km, that rises in the Negev Mountains and the western heights of the Hebron Mountains and extends towards the Mediterranean Sea.

An Index of Tensional and Unintentional (Future) Love of Land

Palestine as a Module for the Future

When the post-Nakba Palestinian revolution launched in 1964/5, Algeria had won its independence. Algerians wrote on failed promises and corrupted companions – warnings for new revolutionaries? Jalal Toufic argues that a feeling of radical closure possibly delayed the Palestinian fighters’ decision to leave Beirut in 1982. He finds a statement on this attachment to the current condition in Mahmoud Darwish’s poetry, "Where should we go after the last frontier? Where should the birds fly after the last sky?", that after loops of displacements there could be no future or an extension of space imagined.

Into the Ether

Into the Ether and Out of Our Anguish This project focuses on the musical representation of contemporary Palestinian narratives from a decolonial, transnational and intersectional feminist lens. It aspires to create a futuristic environment wherein multiple sonic spaces are layered atop one another in an interdisciplinary soundscape inspired by thematic elements of the science fiction and fantasy genres, and utilising field recordings, visual scores and oral histories to do so.

Donia Jarrar

Dr. Donia Jarrar (she/her) is a Los Angeles-based Arab and Muslim-American composer, pianist, producer, and interdisciplinary artist working across the fields of contemporary music, film, dance, theater and installation art. Her music spans the genres of classical, electronic, experimental and chamber pop, with improvisation as a key element of her performance practice. Born in Kuwait to a Palestinian father and an Egyptian mother, Jarrar survived and was a refugee of the first Gulf War of 1990, during which her family was exiled by the Kuwaiti government and forced to flee across borders before eventually settling in her mother’s hometown of Alexandria, Egypt. The family immigrated to New York City in 1992, but the memories of the war and Jarrar’s personal experiences as a third culture kid strongly shaped her compositional voice, leading her to explore themes of intergenerational memory, trauma, identity, exile, displacement, and cultural narrative in her work. She ties these themes into her communal work and at the start of 2020 launched Muslim Witch, an independent collective and label releasing the work of women of Muslim heritage and QTBIPOC artists of LA. She received her Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Michigan.

Assembly

Assembly

As we grow, so does our ability to control the galaxies that form within us: our memories. The building blocks of life. We fashion them into shards or jewels, and they in turn shape who we are. How well we disguise it, as our minds strive to record and journal every last split-second of our existence. We suffer or rejoice and archive every detail. We record the sound of our cat’s crisp meow when, having been away for a spell, we walk through the door; film ourselves as we dance with our cousins, for once caring little for how gangly our moves are; and in diaries, we write about the time when we were stood up, let off, casted out, taken in, looked over, leaned on, passed by...

The Future as a Construct Concealing Marvels

The Future as a Construct Concealing Marvels

This project tries to confront the future, to gaze upon the questions and possibilities, the hopes that push us to move, to heal and to try, or the feelings of anxiety and terror that root our weaknesses and force us to many forms of isolation. At the same time, this project examines the role of the everyday present, with memory as a part of it, in formulating ideas and possibilities for the future.
